.VDF Type 1
Source game engine of Valve uses VDF data files. These data files include different types of game metadata, including data for resources, installation together with configuration scripts, and visualization elements.
You may have encountered games like Half-Life 2 or Counter-Strike, which belong to Valve. Installing such games creates VDF files. Those files store Valve's KeyValues format. This is a plain text format that stores key-value parameters in a tree hierarchy. It has similarities to the file formats like JSON and YAML. Although VDF files are intended to be utilized by the Valve Source game engine, generic text editors can open these files to have a look into the contents.

AntiVir, software for detecting viruses in Windows, uses this data file to store virus definitions. Those definitions, in turn, include signatures that are necessary to identify any virus in your operating system. Generally, you get those data files into your computer whenever your update the definitions.
You can find VDF files in the AntiVir setup folder. Those files are named as vbase000.vdf, vbase001.vdf, etc.

Virtual Dub's filter plugin. The software is used to capture and process videos in Windows OS. This file format extends the abilities of the VirtualDub by adding special effects or bringing support to additional file formats.
You can load VDF filters into VirtualDub by clicking the "Load" button in the Add Filters dialog box. They will be loaded automatically if the VDF files are placed in the plugins folder within the VirtualDub program folder.

Gothic video game series use these data files. It can include characters, worlds, textures, 3D models, and sounds. The path of these data files is under the folder /Gothic II/Data.
GoMan or other hex-editors can open and manage VDF files. However, you shouldn't change their content. If you do so, they will most probably become useless.
