SKP file type
The ".skp" extension is used for a proprietary binary file made by SketchUp. SketchUp is a simple to learn and use three-dimensional design program. There is no SKP documentation available for the public, but libraries can be easily found. SKP files can contain additional elements you can use in your project and design data such as shades and textures.
An SKP format is a special format used for the SketchUp. It contains a 3D model and all information about its elements. Using SketchUp, you can create, open, view and edit SKP files. SketchUp is considered to be an easy-to-use 3D modelling tool. After being saved, an SKP file can be reused as a component for other projects. You can send SKP files to other user to use it in their projects. For example, you can create a 3D forest scene with animal models imported from independent SKP files.
Using SketchUp, you can save your project for archiving or for further backup using the appropriate format. A file that contains backup data has the SKB format.
The ".skp" file can have different structure depending on the tool you use to create it. You can work with the SKP using SketchUP Importer/Exporter and SketchUP C API library. Besides SketchUP, there's the Warehouse 3D, special library used to share design with other users, where the SKP format is also available.
At first, SketchUp was owned by @Last Software. SketchUp 5 is the last version released by this team in 2006. In 2006 @Last Software was purchased by Google. And SketchUp 6 was released as a Google product. From 2012 SketchUp is owned by Trimble. 3D models created in SketchUp can be hosted on Google Earth or shared with the help of 3D Warehouse tool.
SKP file can contain not only a 3D model, but print files as well. To open or edit them, you will need Sage, an accounting tool. A file created in Sage will be saved in the ".skp" format.
