About files.wiki
files.wiki is a reference for file extensions. Each page explains what a file type is, how it is built, which programs open it on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, how to convert it, which problems are common and what to watch out for when opening files from unknown sources.
How the pages are made
Pages are drafted with the help of AI language models from structured research about each format, then edited and checked by hand. Facts such as file signatures (magic bytes), MIME types and program lists are kept in a separate database and shown in tables. If you find a mistake, please let us know or leave a comment on the page.
Opening files in your browser
The file viewer on files.wiki runs entirely in your browser. Files you open with it are read on your device and are never uploaded to our server.
