What is a .MP3 file?

Generally, the .mp3 file extension represents the most commonly seen MPEG Audio Layer III which is a compressed digital format standardized by MPEG and marketed by Fraunhofer IIS in partnership. The most common format consists either of one or two channels of perceptually coded sound. It would generally be located among media content, such as a music library, podcasts, recorded sounds (voicemail), ring tones, audiobook contents, browser media references, mobile digital players, car audio system and phones, as well as shared file locations from the past days. Generally, most .mp3 files comprise MP3 streams that might come with some metadata but have no packaging in Zip containers.

Depending on the file type you will have different beginning parts of the files as some will start with the ID3v2 tag which will feature the signature "ID3" in ASCII characters while some will feature the first MPEG audio frames of synch (the FF FB, FF F3, or FF F2). The common MIME types include audio/mpeg although on old file servers it could be incorrectly defined as the audio/mp3, audio/x-mpeg, or even application/octet-stream. There are two other .mp3 variations that include MP3PRO and MP3 Surround that were invented in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

More details about opening .MP3 files

When on Windows the .mp3 is opened on double-click via its association settings - typically Windows Media Player or the newer Groove/Media Player app. The file extension also works in VLC, foobar2000, MusicBee, AIMP, Winamp, Audacity, Adobe Audition etc. For playing purposes VLC is recommended, but foobar2000 / MusicBee for library maintenance purposes, while AIMP and Winamp for playback purposes. For manipulation and editing - Audacity or Adobe audition should be used.

With MACOS operating system - Finder's Quick Look feature plays any standard MP3 file together with Music and QuickTime Player, VLC, foobar2000, Audacity as well as Adobe Audition applications. Distributions of Linux where packages have been kept updated usually have such associations as: VLC, mpv, Rhythmbox, audacious, Clementine or even Strawberry players together with FFmpeg (which is actually not player), mpg123 as command line utilities and Audacity. Android operating systems play .mp3 in media apps built in the OS itself, as well as in VLC, AIMP, Musicolet, Poweramp and other file explorer/manipulation apps; iOS/iPad operating system plays the .mp3 file through preview of the Files apps as well in imported library from Apple music together with various podcast apps, VLC app, foobar2000, Documents by Readdle. And browsers currently available for use: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari - plays .mp3 via the standard HTML5 audio when MIME content-type of audio file on the servers is set correctly, e.g. 'audio/mpeg'.

In case the operation involves manipulating the sound (cut, reduce noise level, normalize) and/or changing the encoding format - .mp3 is to be opened in Audacity, Adobe Audition and Ocenaudio application for starters. If the .mp3 double-click action fails to open it, use Open With feature, update media player or app associations in OS settings, make sure about .mp3 file extension and try VLC or ffprobe utility.

Technical details

MP3 is not just a binary MPEG audio data stream but actually is the set of consecutive audio frames and certainly, not the text file. MP3 header has 12-bit sync word at the beginning, next follow the values indicating: the version of MPEG specification, layer, presence/absence of protection, bitrate index, sampling frequency, the flag about whether there is a padding, mode and the additional channel data, flags concerning copyright and origin. Also in MP3 audio stream we could find the main data and ancillary data.

As the codec is the lossy transform based one encoding process uses such processes as psycho-acoustics modeling with elimination of masked components followed by subband and discrete MDCT transforms and further by quantization and Huffman's encoding as well as usage of bit-reservoir technology. Usually, MP3 frame should contain 1152 samples of PCM signal. But in case of MPEG-2, -2.5 the amount of the samples in every granule depends on decoding mode, which could be 576. MP3 has the typical sampling frequency of either 32 KHz, either 44.1 either 48 kHz and corresponding bitrate of from 32 to 320 Kbit/s. MPEG-2 and -2.5 extended this audio format to the sampling of audio to lower sampling rates to lower sampling rates often used for speech and low-bitrate material and using that to encode speech.

Such audio files may be constant bitrate, variable bitrate, or average bitrate. In addition VBR files often include some header information like Xing or VBRI or Info near the beginning of first audio file frame storing information about such data as seekable points or encoder's info. Metadata could be saved into the form of ID3v2 at the top and either as the ID3v1 metadata in the last 128-byte block.

MP3 files are quite large: one minute of such recording will be of around 1 MByte at 128 kBit/s, of around 1.4 MBytes at 192 kbit/s and around 2.4 MBytes at 320 kbit/s. Standard MIME type is audio/mpeg. Checking of validity could use both tags and MPEG frame headers because neither the .mp3 extension nor an ID3 tag alone proves valid audio.

How to convert .MP3 files

Use WAV for cases when you need uncompressed audio for editing, CD PCM, and any analysis purposes. Conversion via FFmpeg of, say, MP3 files to PCM will yield something like ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav; in this case, you get PCM, but the file is huge and it preserves loss from the generation, that of MP3.

Use FLAC whenever you want a container without loss for tagging or archiving: for example, the command for conversion looks as ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a flac output.flac. The result does not contain studio master and data, lost when encoded, is lost as well.

Convert the audio in case, you have Apple-related use case (or just want to make your MP3 a bit smaller without significant loss of audio quality): the command goes something as: ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.m4a

Use Opus audio for the cases, when the audio content is speech: the conversion to Opus should go this way: ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.opus

In case your embedded device uses Ogg Vorbis and open source, you can convert your MP3 to it by using a suitable ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

Simple audio trimming (without re-encoding): ffmpeg -ss 00:01:00 -to 00:02:30 -i input.mp3 -c copy output.mp3

The copy or map functions for audio may modify your album art or ID3 frame(s), including ReplayGain values, Chapters, Lyrics, etc.

Convert toToolCommand / note
WAV FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav Decodes MP3 to uncompressed PCM for editing; quality is not restored, and file size increases greatly.
FLAC FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a flac output.flac Produces a lossless container for archiving an MP3 decode, but it cannot recover data lost during MP3 encoding.
AAC/M4A FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.m4a Useful for Apple devices and streaming workflows; this is lossy-to-lossy transcoding and may add artifacts.
Ogg Vorbis FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg Open format often used on Linux and the web; requires FFmpeg built with libvorbis.
Opus FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.opus Good for speech, podcasts, and low-bitrate streaming; older players may not support .opus.
MP3, constant bitrate FFmpeg ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3 Re-encodes to a more compatible CBR file; avoid unless needed because quality can degrade.
Trimmed MP3 without re-encoding FFmpeg ffmpeg -ss 00:01:00 -to 00:02:30 -i input.mp3 -c copy output.mp3 Copies compressed frames when cut points align closely; edits may be frame-accurate rather than sample-accurate.

Common problems and fixes

"Cannot play the file" or "Format not supported": the MP3 format is incorrectly detected due to an incorrect .MP3 extension, interrupted MP3 download, player unable to interpret uncommon MPEG 2 or MPEG 2.5 audio stream.

Check file integrity using either VLC or run ffprobe input.mp3, to check for MPEG Audio Stream detected by FFmpeg.

Duration sounds correct but file produces no audio or only noise, clicking sound effects, and/or audible crackling - the file might contain damaged audio frames or bit reservoir, or something which follows the end of ID3 tag is not MPEG audio. Although FFmpeg is able to correctly read past some damage or corruption, you may try to re-mux/decode MP3 or even reencode entire audio.

Seeking fails, or reported MP3 duration is wrong, or seeking bar is unstable - this problem affects VBR mp3 lacking special Xing/Info or VBRI headers. You must reconstruct the file using ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -c copy output.mp3, or even better, reencode it if seek table is severely damaged.

An mp3 which starts from ID3V2 header and still cannot be played has only tag data with corrupted (or empty), MPEG frames.

ID3-encoded artist and other tag strings displayed with corrupted or strange symbols - they are ID3v1 tags encoding rules violation or old text formats for ID3v2 tags. Use tag editor to rewrite metadata properly using MP3TAG/Foobar2000/Picard, etc - and make sure it saves data in UTF-8 or UTF-16.

No artwork shown when expected to show - this might occur when artwork encoded is unsupported APIC tag, it was excessively large or ID3 tags were improperly constructed. Moderately sized JPEG artwork (35 KB) and ID3 V2.3 compatible with older readers is recommended. The problem of noises/clicks at cutting point in MP3 occurs mostly due to MP3 being split right in the middle of MP3 audio frame - you might want to perform a sample-accurate edits or to align it to MP3 frames boundaries.

Security considerations

Audio frames of MP3 are not executables, and there are no macros stored in that file format; thus, the threat level is not comparable to the risk of a document or script file infection. There are bugs related to improper parsing of frames, ID3 tag of the larger than normal size, or broken embedded image in decoders, readers, album art handlers. Tags may store artists' names, various comments, purchase identifiers, encoding details, datetags and file paths from tagging applications, and, of course, filepaths. Consider your .mp3 file potentially suspicious - use only fully updated software to play them like VLC, foobar2000, mpv and other software powered by FFmpeg. If a web page tries to open an MP3 file, it is just an audio file with MIME type “audio/mpeg” and certainly nothing more scriptable. Prior to publishing, check out tags using tools like exiftool, ffmpeg, Mp3tag, Kid3 and MusicBrainz Picard.

History and versions

Erlangen and allied institutes' research efforts concerning the topic in late 1980s resulted in the emergence of Layer III technology by Karlheinz Brandenburg and Fraunhofer IIS. Layer III alongside other layers were standardized in ISO/IEC 11172-3 in 1993; whereas MPEG-2 Audio became standard of ISO/IEC 13818-3 in 1995. Extension .mp3 came into common usage through PC encoders, Winamp, portable players and internet downloads from the mid-90s. Portable Mass-market players were manufactured in the late 90s of last century. ID3v1 developed in the 90s is a 128 bytes long tag that was placed on the end of file; ID3v2 moved metadata to the start and enabled the inclusion of images as well as Unicode support and increased size of frames.

mp3PRO was developed in 2001 with the addition of spectral band replication technology to boost up low-bitrate compression quality of music files. In 2004, MP3 Surround was invented with possibility of stereo-compatible multichannel delivery of music. Till 2017, patent protection on the most relevant technologies became exhausted in many jurisdictions resulting in termination of licensing process in Fraunhofer. Although the format remains compatible everywhere; AAC and Opus have technical advantages of younger formats.

AAC & M4A typically perform better than MP3 at the same bit rate in Apple Music streams as well as other contexts, however, MP3 is better on more outdated sound systems and car radio systems that are only .mp3 file compatible. Opus is a better format for audio with voice, podcasts, and songs in low bitrates, low latency being supported as well, some receivers and old portable devices being unable to decode them. Ogg Vorbis is an alternative to MP3 as an open lossy format that can be found on many Linux and in games. It is available only on a smaller amount of consumer devices compared to MP3 files. FLAC is lossless and used to store music digitally, being very large when in use (.flac). WAV (.wav) stores uncompressed PCM, while AIFF (.aiff) serves a similar role.
