World of Warcraft, commonly abbreviated "WoW," is a popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). It is developed by Blizzard Entertainment and boasts over seven million subscribers worldwide. WoW takes place in the virtual world of Azeroth. Players create one or more avatars and complete quests while interacting with other players in the world. WoW is available on both Mac and Windows platforms. Users must pay a monthly subscription fee.

WoW provides different genres of gameplay, including player versus environment (PvE), player versus player (PvP), and role playing (RP). PvE gameplay allows players to either quest on their own or join raids that allow them to defeat dungeons. PvP mode allows players to compete against each other in arena battles. In role-playing mode, players act and speak as if they were in a virtual world as a fantasy character. In WoW, players have the ability to create and customize avatars as they gain experience in the game. Each avatar has a faction (Alliance/Horde), gender (male/female), class, race and two primary professions. There is also a class talent description. By completing quests, players can earn items and gear that equip their characters for higher level game content.

Blizzard offers ongoing support and new content to the WoW community. As of June 2017, Blizzard has released six expansion packs: The Burning Crusade (BC), Wrath of the Lich King (WOTLK), Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria (MOP), Warlords of Draenor (WOD), and Legion. Each expansion pack gives players the opportunity to explore new content and to upgrade their characters to a higher level. Blizzard provides regular patch updates to fix bugs and balance the game.
