Description
GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a graphics editor that can be used to edit, retouch, and convert images. It is available on Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms.
GIMP is a layer-based image editor that resembles Adobe Photoshop. It can be used to batch process images, convert image formats, create mass-production images, and perform photo retouching. GIMP has a full suite of painting tools, such as Airbrush, Pencil, Clone, and Brush. You can add text layers, effects and filters to the tool, as well as transformable paths, quickmasks, full alpha channel support, quickmasks, and more than 100 plugins that enhance your capabilities.
GIMP supports many of the industry-standard image formats, such as JPEG and PNG. The program uses a proprietary file extension (.XCF) but opens and exports to many different graphics files, such as .PSD, .JPG, .PDF, .PNG, .BMP, and .TIFF. To make editing more personal, you can create templates using the edits and settings that you have for your images.
GIMP is a very capable image editor. It is similar to Adobe Photoshop and offers many of the same capabilities. It can also open many industry-standard file formats. Throw in the fact that GIMP is free and you have a very attractive image editor.
