A raster image which is not compressed and is made of pixels that are in a form of a rectangular grid known as BMP. There is also a header in the file together with colorized bitmap pixels. The header is composed of bitmap identifier, file size, width, height, color options, and bitmap data starting point.
BMP file opened in Microsoft Windows Photos 10
The file header contains a various number of bits per pixel. Those bits define levels of color depths per pixel. A BMP file may include them. You can also save BMP files in a grayscale color scheme.
Generic apps that are available in Windows and macOS can open BMP files. The former OS has Microsoft Windows Photos, while the latter OS comes with Apple Preview or Apple Photos. We can use any of those apps to view BMP files.
We can also use several other applications to open, edit and save BMP files. Some of them are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and ACD Systems Canvas.
