Description

Microsoft Works is a productivity suite designed for home users. It is often viewed as a trimmed-down version of Microsoft Office since it is primarily used in home environments for personal and household tasks. Works is no more developed.

The following applications are included in Works:

  • Works Word Processor: Used for creating documents, brochures, resumes, letters, cards, and other stationery; includes several pre-built templates, a dictionary, and a thesaurus.
  • Spreadsheet: Allows users record and analyze personal information such as finances, home inventories, and so on.
  • Works Database: Used for storing structured information, such as personal contacts.
  • Work Calendar: Allows users manage personal schedules, to-do lists, and can combine multiple calendars into one file.
Even though Works uses its own proprietary file formats, the software is compatible with standard Office formats for Microsoft Word and Excel. For example, users can save Works Word Processor ( .WPS ) files as Word ( .DOCX ) documents and Works Spreadsheet .WKS ) Files as Excel ( .XLSX ) documents. Works can also be opened directly in most Office formats, but some Office-specific objects may not work.

Microsoft Works is an excellent alternative to Office Suite for home users. It has many useful applications to keep track of your finances, manage your schedule, and create documents. If you are looking for some of the functionality of Microsoft Office but don't need all of the extra tools that it comes with, Works is a great option for you.
